What is low level wind shear?

  1. LLWS is rapid change in either wind direction or wind velocity at low (final approach) altitudes. It is a dangerous situation since it can cause rapid loss of altitude. At some airports, LLWS detection devices exist that can monitor this situation and if detected, ATC will advise aircraft of this condition.
