QOD#14

What does ATIS stand for? Is it mandatory to get the ATIS before calling the tower at Palo Alto?

  1. ATIS = Automated Terminal Information Service which provides recorded weather information typically updated hourly. It is intended to ease the amount of work by the tower controllers by providing pilots with access to routine weather information. It is not mandatory to have ATIS information before calling tower... it is however recommended. If you do not have ATIS information it is helpful when you call tower you indicate negative ATIS so that tower realizes you just didn't forget to tell them you have ATIS information. In that situation, tower will provide the minimum weather information that includes wind velocity and direction as well as the current altimeter setting.
