What is weathervaning?

  1. Weathervanning is the term used to describe the effect that the wind has on the plane’s surfaces that causes the plane to turn into the wind. As the wind blows, it puts a force on the sides of the plane and the vertical stabilizer such that those forces cause the plane to turn into the direction of the wind. The name seems to come from old style weathervanes that swivel with the wind indicating the direction of the wind. Weathervanning effects all planes but it seems to have its greatest impact on trail dragger planes when they are on the ground and are not moving and thus don’t have the ability to counteract the effects of weathervanning.
