QOD#4

Why is it important to trim the airplane in the correct order (pitch, power, trim) rather than, say... pitch, trim power... or power, trim, pitch?

  1. When you trim the plane you want to adjust the trim last since the result of using the trim is to relieve the control pressure on the yoke and doing it last means you only have to do it once. If you adjust pitch then trim then change power, you will need to trim again for the new combination of pitch and power.

You adjust pitch first because in most cases what you are trying to do is to fly the plane given a specific attitude (i.e. are you wanting to climb and so need to establish the pitch appropriate for a climb, or are you wanting to maintain straight and level flight and thus establish the pitch associated with that), this is followed then by setting the appropriate power to maintain that attitude, then finally using the trim to relieve the control pressure to maintain the attitude at the newly establish pitch and power settings.
