You just landed at Oakland North complex and as you exit the runway you see this marking... so does this mean prepare to take a right turn?

So this is VOR ground checkpoint marking. Only a few Bay Area airports have a VOR ground checkpoint. The others are San Jose, Hayward, and San Francisco. Detailed information can be found in the VOR CHECK section of the AFD. For this one in OAK the AFD indicates that it is 0.9 Miles from the VOR on the 081 radial. You can use this information to validate that your NAV radio is working properly.
ReplyDeleteSo here is another question.... to use the VOR check point do you need to line up the nose of your plane in the direction of the arrow?
to answer your question, Nope. A VOR receiver only knows its position in space. It doesn't care about heading.
ReplyDeleteTo add up to Michelle and Stew's answer, The arrow is not to align the heading of the A/C but Is pointing exactly to the VOR (VOR antennae) of that aerodrome
